The serpentine belt tensioner consists of a tensioner pulley, tensioner arm and spring-loaded hub. The purpose of the tensioner is to hold proper tension on the serpentine belt to prevent it from coming off any of the pulleys in the serpentine system. Over time the spring in the tensioner hub can weaken, which left unchecked will create an inconvenient road side layover for you. Ford Motor Company recommends inspecting the belt and tensioner at 15,000 and 30,000 miles. Anyone with a 2005 Focus and basic auto-repair experience can perform this task.
